The most recognizable monument in Saint Louis, Gateway Arch soars 630 feet into the sky; the stainless steel structure was built in the 1960s to commemorate the city's role in the westward expansion of the United States. Trams take a four-minute journey to the top of the monument, where views can reach up to 30 miles into the distance. At the base of both legs of the tower, historical exhibits address life in the city during the 19th century and the construction efforts involved in creating the arch. Part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial park, other attractions include the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse building.
Open daily Sep - May: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Jun - Aug: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.; Tram schedule varies, check website for details and reservations.
