When erected in 1834, the Basilica of St. Louis, King, "The Old Cathedral", named for King Louis IX, was the first and only cathedral west of the Mississippi. The cathedral is located in the historic riverfront district, near the Gateway Arch. It is best known for its amazing neo-classical marble pillars, and its extensive collection of religious paintings kept in the basement.
